HISTORY
“A tree falls the way it leans. Be careful which way you lean”The Once-ler (yes that is his actual name) grew up with his very Southern family in...wherever the hell the Doctor Seuss world is located. He was always berated by his mother, told he would never amount to anything. An inventor, he came up with the idea of something revolutionary. A Thneed. He just needed to find the right material to create it with, so he set off to find it.
What he found was the Truffula Valley, a place he himself calls 'Paradise', a beautiful valley filled with Brown Bar-ba-loots, Swomee Swans, Hummingfish and the beautiful Truffula trees. 'Their touch was softer than silk, and they had the sweet smell of butterfly milk'. Deciding the tufts of the trees would be the perfect material to create his Thneed, he set about chopping one down. In doing so, he summoned the guardian spirit of the forest, the Lorax.
The Lorax, speaking for the trees and the creatures who depended on them, tried his hardest to get rid of the Once-ler, afraid of what he might do to the valley. After a botched attempt to 'sail him peacefully down the river', which ended in a near miss of a watery death, the Once-ler swore he would not chop down another tree. He remained living happily in the valley with the Lorax and the forest creatures, going into the town daily to try to sell his Thneed, and failing each time. It was only when he gave up hope, throwing the thing away in despair that the townspeople realised what a marvel it was, and clamoured for one of their own.
Realising he needed help to run his new business, the Once-ler called in his family. This turned out to be a terrible idea. His method of harvesting only the tufts of the Truffulas to make his Thneeds proved to be too slow to meet demand. With the encouragement of his mother, the Once-ler decided to start chopping down the trees again, and thus started his own downward spiral.
Blinded by greed, he tore the valley apart, his factory and power growing with his wealth, ignoring the Loax's pleas at every turn. He took over the local town, recreating it as 'Thneedville'. He chose to not pay attention to the devastation of the valley around him, how his Smogulous Smoke and Schloppity-Schlopp (pollutive by-products of his factory) were destroying the environments of the Swomee Swans and Hummingfish respectively, while the Brown Bar-ba-loots were driven to starvation, unable to get the fruit from the trees he was destroying.
The Lorax confronted the Once-ler for a final time about his actions, and the Once-ler reacted with anger, telling the Lorax he would continue to chop down the Truffulas to make more Thneeds, and nothing would stop him. At those words, the very last Truffula tree in the valley was chopped down, the Lorax quietly adding 'that may stop you'. His eyes finally opened, the Once-ler was horrified by the destruction he had caused to the valley, but it was too late. Facing bankruptcy, his family abandoned him. Hoping they could find a new ecosystem somewhere else, the Lorax sent the forest creatures away, before lifting himself up into the sky, leaving the Once-ler alone with his guilt. The Lorax also left one word, etched into a stone: 'Unless'. The Once-ler, horrified by his own actions, cut himself away from everyone, and it's at this point he is brought into Paradisa.
PERSONALITY
“Happy yet? Did you fill that hole deep down inside you, or do you still need more?”To understand the Once-ler's personality, first you have to understand his childhood. He was never offered love or encouragement, and was thus instilled a deep need to prove himself. Especially to his hateful mother. He uses sarcasm as a barrier to protect himself from people, and as such takes a while to open up to others, to show them the optimistic, friendly guy underneath. All he really wants is to have friends, and be loved for who he is. Unfortunately he struggles to get this.
He's a brilliant inventor, being able to creating something that can quite literally be anything. Once he's got something in his head, it's very hard to derail him, which unfortunately can lead to very bad things happening (such as the destruction of an ENTIRE ECOSYSTEM). He's very quick on the defensive, again, wanting friends but unwilling to completely open himself up to getting hurt.
He tends not to think about the consequences of any of his actions, and as such tends to say whatever is on his mind out loud, regardless of the chances of it hurting whoever his remarks are aimed at. He doesn't do this to be especially malicious, he just simply doesn't
think before doing something.
As of recent events, he has pulled himself even more away from people. He is deeply remorseful for his actions, and is haunted by the fact he could have stopped what happened to the valley at any time. As a result, he doesn't feel he deserves to be around people any more, and should stay away from them, lest he corrupts something or someone again. This doesn't work so good when he's still desperately lonely and only wants a friend. He's not going to be winning any hermit awards any time soon.
